Shamian is a sandbar formed by the alluvial of the Pearl River, hence the name Shamian. Shamian is located in the southwest of Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. It is adjacent to the Pearl River Baie Pond in the south, and Shajiyong in the north. It is a small island facing Liu23 Road. There are eight streets and alleys, covering an area of 0.3 square kilometers. During the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, Shamian was a trading hub and tourist destination in China and abroad. After the Opium War, it became the British and French Concessions after the eleventh year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty (1861). Therefore, the island is full of European-style buildings, forming a unique open-air building “museum”
Shamian is an important commercial port in Guangzhou. After a hundred years, more than ten countries have set up consulates in Shamian, nine foreign banks and more than 40 foreign banks have been operating in Shamian.
